On January 28, 2026, the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, Hawthorn School for Girls welcomed His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo to their atrium, where he celebrated Holy Mass – “the greatest gift on earth” – followed by student performances and a luncheon with families and guests.

Beginning with the words of the entrance hymn “Come Down, O Love Divine,” the school family gathered to lift hearts, minds and incense to God's presence, asking Him to draw near, to light the path, and to make His dwelling within them. Fr. Eric Nicolai, school chaplain, formally greeted the Cardinal on the school’s behalf.

In his homily, Cardinal Leo first addressed students, reminding them that St. Thomas Aquinas, one of his favourite patron saints, is praying for all students, is always available for help and is a wonderful model of living a life of faith in harmony with reason. Next, he spoke to faculty and staff, thanking them for following their teaching vocation and encouraging them to continue sowing the seeds of Christ's compassion, kindness and hope in students. He also addressed parents and grandparents who selflessly, sacrificially, give life and love – “the greatest gifts of all” to their children and grandchildren.

Following Mass, students recited a poem for His Eminence written by Junior School classes, sung a touching song especially for him, and the Lower School string ensemble performed classical piece “Bergamasca.” Upper School art student Lucia gifted his Eminence her replica of the Madonna and Child painting.

Cardinal Leo graciously expressed appreciation and congratulations for the blossoming of Hawthorn's educational mission to instill a love of truth and charity in students, who were so excited to meet him. He took the time to speak with many individually, generously and joyfully sharing his friendship and encouragement. The school community felt magnificently blessed to welcome him to campus, and, similar to the words of closing hymn 'O God Beyond All Praising,' to worship and wonder at every gift God sends.
